What's up FK? I'd like your opinion on a detention I received today, which I refuse to serve. Here goes.
To start, I am a very good student, maintaining grades of B+ or higher in every class. I take many AP and Honors courses, and I make it my point to excel in the classroom in order to help my future. Although I do respect the "power" figures, I like to fight authority within my own rights. I am never in the office, and never in trouble for anything because I tend to keep to myself. Two days ago, I was assigned to bring in an advertisement and type up a one to two minute speech about the advertisement. My friend, we will call him Ed, forgot to bring in an advertisement. I texted Ed telling him that I could hook it up for him, and so I printed him out an advertisement. The advertisement was for a tampax commercial, and essentially I gave it to him in private. Only myself, and him saw the advertisement. He left it behind, and our female teacher picked it up, felt offended, and decided to write me up about it. These are the arguments I gave as to why the detention is (for lack of better terms) bullshit, and how I would not be serving it.
Arguments:
-The ad was found and printed through the school's internet, therefore it cannot be that bad or else it'd be blocked
-Essentially anything can be controversial, and my first amendment right allows me to provide controversy
-I cannot be punished for expressing my first amendment right
-I did not disrupt the learning process, nor did anyone feel an offense regarding the topic
-Just because she is offended, does not give her the right to punish me, that isn't my problem
-A mature and responsible adult would have a discussion about it, not immediately punish me
Probably some more, I don't remember all of the conversation.
Here's the kicker, they told me that she felt threatened by her lack of power within the situation. I asked them if the USA was a dictatorship, to which they obviously replied with no. Why does a lack of power threaten a teacher of the public education system then?
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK FK? DO I DESERVE AND SHOULD I SERVE THIS DETENTION?
(My parents agree with me and are defending me to the school administration)
