They aren't necessarily free. The link says free because it was promoting Listia, kinda like an eBay auction site but used credits. They say free because you technically don't use real $$, but you still have to purchase them with a currency.

Nah, there are rare Ambassador avatar items such as the Space Suit. I'm willing to bet people would pay an upwards up $100 for it.
