Why is the current age of consent so high?

Why is the age of consent 16? In some countries it's 12 and I personally believe that it should be 12 here too. Having it so inordinately high is a stupid law that has damaged too many good people , how is society ever going to progress if we don't allow logical things like this to evolve.

Are there any valid arguments against the age of consent being 12?
 
The Age of Consent being the Age to have sex correct?

While I do agree with you on some degree due to my own selfishness xD
It is not illegal for two humans to participate in sex if they are both under the age of 16, if say one is 16 and the other is 15, it would be considered rape, but if one is 13 and the other is 14, it would be legal. I do think that at the ages of 12-16 you're growing (physically) at a rapid pace and have many spur of the moment sexual needs, if it were lawed to be in favor, there would be much uneducated sex.

Ok well anyway, I agree with Sir in several ways, But i do have to disagree with you News, 12 is a little bit too young as Sir said that is still a major growth age. It's best if both parties are more mature, like 16, it makes sense.
 
How do you define mature though?
Do you suddenly become more mature when you're 16?

Well no, But I said more mature, like there body is somewhat ready, 12 is kinda Pre-mature, as in Physical wise.
 
I say when your 14 your old enough you should know what sex is and etc so do your thing.
 
It's because, quite honestly, a lot of the people in that age range are not mature enough to decide, and usually make bad choices that they will later regret. Teen moms usually end up single and on welfare or some other government aid. (In America) Along with all of the other troubles that the idea of young people having sex brings forth.

One day it might be lowered, but I wouldn't count on it anytime soon.

Let them make their choices the parents taught them now let them dictate.
 
I think it should be 14.
Oh, here's a good rape joke "I don't think they can consider it rape if you cover their mouth before they can shout 'no!'"
 
But just so everyone knows:
Age of consent =/= age of sex
You can have sex at 2 if you want, with another 2 year old or around there.
At 16 though you can fuck a 28 year old etc.
