There are many simple ways to reduce pollution which, when taken collectively, can make a huge difference on the global scale.

The conventional car, which uses an internal combustion engine, is one of the biggest sources of pollution, considering that there are 700 million of these cars in the world. As a car owner, you have the responsibility of minimizing your car's contribution to pollution. Plan your trips well. This reduces gasoline consumption, thus cutting down on air pollution. As a would-be car owner, you have the choice of what car to buy. Be aware that a SUV produces 6 tons of carbon monoxide a year, which is one ton higher than that of a mid-sized car.

Moreover, you may use your car less often, especially if you live close to work, school or anywhere you want to go. Imagine how much pollution you prevent this way. You might want to go somewhere using a bike, or simply walk. These are great ways to exercise and save some bucks and reduce pollution at the same time. Carpooling is also encouraged, which is another alternative which can cut down on pollution.

Also, try as much as possible to avoid waiting for something with your car engine running. If the line at the drive-thru diner is long, park your vehicle and go in instead.

Keeping your vehicle well maintained can help significantly reduce pollution. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, as an increase in traction requires more fuel. Get car engine tuneups and maintenance checks regularly.

In addition, your driving habits can have an impact on pollution. Aggressive driving, characterized by sudden acceleration and hard braking, consumes a lot of fuel. Driving in a gear too low is also not recommended if you own a manual transmission vehicle.

There are a number of simple yet surefire ways to reduce pollution in the home. For instance, you can do energy conservation measures such as turning the lights and appliances off when not using them; planting trees around your house to provide cool shade especially during summer; using the electric fan instead of the air conditioner; hanging the clothes outside to dry instead of the dryer; or putting up window blinds for use during daytime instead of turning the lights on.

Using power saving devices and appliances can help significantly cut pollution. Compact fluorescent lamps, for instance, are energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. Use rechargeable batteries for frequently used devices.

Another way to help reduce pollution is to recycle or to reuse. In fact, reusing one kilogram of material means preventing two kilograms of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere. Reuse paper and plastic materials. There are so many things that you can still do with them. Also, instead of throwing away aluminum cans, glass bottles and other scrap items, sell the to junk shops, which send them to recycling plants. You cut pollution this way, while earning money. When shopping, use a canvas bag instead of a new plastic or paper bag.

The little choices that you make everyday may mean doing simple ways to reduce pollution and save the environment. By making smart choices and doing responsible actions at all times, you help keep the world a much better place to live in

Personally, as much as possible, I do not use products that emit CO2 (insecticides, body spray). I put the different garbages (plastic, metal, paper) in their respective bins for recycling and I use either public transport or my bike when I move out.
