What should you do to be chosen as a Moderator?

Hey,

Most of the time moderator's on forums are people that the Administrators do not know, however they are chosen because they are trusted. The sort of person you do not want as a moderator is one who begs for the job and nags you. But what sort of person do you look for to be a moderator?

Moderators need to show that they are trustworthy, this doesn't mean they go around looking for posts to report but they should be trying to help the members of the forum. However you cannot tell whether someone is trustworthy or not in a day, you need to have known them for a longer period of time. I tend to choose moderators after at least two months of seeing them around the forum.

However, you also don't want to have moderators who aren't there to do their job. They need to be active and posting daily which shows that they will be there. It also helps if they tell you whether or not they are away either by posting or PMing you but they may update their status to away if your forum supports that option. (MyBB does!)

Along with activity your moderators need to do the job they are given correctly. This means they should show that they are willing to help people rather than ban them or warn them in their first post. Try and make useful posts whether directly to a user or just as a guide or tutorial.

Hopefully this will help some of you looking to become moderators in the future.
