What does a middleman do?

I'm a little new to this marketplace stuff. Could you please (in detail) describe what a middleman does? I'm considering opening up a free/possibly paid (when I get vouches) service of it. Would like to have some info.

MiddleMan(Both Items)

MiddleMan > Trader1(Item2)
Middleman > Trader2(Item1)

I hope you understand that.

Basically they are in the middle of the deal so nobody gets scammed since the middleman verifies that both people get the items.

Well, there's a buyer and seller, they both give the items that they are selling/buying to the MiddleMan, once MM has the items, he trades the items/money back to them (Buyer gets the sellers stuff, seller gets the buyers stuff) It's pretty complicated stuff, if you need more help PM me

You agree to the sale.

THey give you the items/$.

THen you exchange them to the other side.
