Should I allow guests to post in "The Hut"?

I think if someone truly desire to be a part of a forum community they would just damn well register.

Exactly. If it's their real interest, then they register.

I suggest we try it out for a week and see the outcome.

A week cannot tell if it's good or not.
Some weeks there might be a lot guests, others not.

The activity and who posts can be different from day to day.

I don't even see why this has become such a huge debate... If the guests spam, then they spam. It's not going to change all of your lives dramatically.

And to be quite honest, most of the threads in the hut could already be classed as meaningless and spam-like anyway, so there wouldn't be much change to the quality of threads in the section.

DON'T

I had a forum which allowed that, and I had like every day atleast 10 threads, with viagra advertising form bots.

Then your forum didn't have good enough security.
How would you protect against bots, if you allow guestposting.

You cannot protect against it that way.

Why do the same things keep coming up lol? Most spam bots can't get through a simple verification question. Some can get past captcha though. Either way, WE. HAVE. STAFF. Lol.

Cracking a captcha is like the easiest thing.

OCR can do it.

Also I would hate to write a captcha everytime I make a post.

You're so leet. I'm at awe being in your presence. TEACH ME, OH GREAT ONE.

Crayo just enable it, it's your forum.

I'm not leet and at least I'm not a pretending whore. I just pointed out a captcha will not make a difference to protect against bots.

There's difficulties. Atm we have a plugin to stop guests viewing threads (they see what sort of content we have, but can't view it, it's good for sign ups), so we'd need to manually edit that to allow them to see threads in the Hut. Then it's just a simple edit in ACP to let them post here. If I decide to do it, I'll figure it out tomorrow.

@Bauss: Captcha's stop just under less than half of automated bots. Verification questions like "What's MF stand for?" would stop 90%+ if not 100% of automated spam bots. You'll get the occasional human spammer, but that's what Staff are for, that's what the report button is for.

Well if you enable it, could you make a checkbox, where users can press check if they wants only register members to be able to see the thread?

Crayo, have you made up your mind yet? Because I believe it will help out our forum post count in the long run.

Most forum users these days know nothing about hacking, so they would not be able to crack a captcha that easily, so it would be okay if you let guests post with a captcha.
