Should I allow guests to post in "The Hut"?

No you shouldn't. Bots will just be spamming. Trust me, it cannot lead to any good.

If they really are interested in the forum, then they will register.
Also banned members would be able to post still.

I can only see it work, if there is proper mods/staff to moderate it 24/7.

Agreed.

Stats show we get a reasonable amount of guests which check the Board.

They don't post because they likely don't want to commit to a Forum which is new.

Letting them post in the Hut gives them an opportunity to get used to the community then make the decision to join.

Edit: We do have mods and staff to moderate 24/7. We had the recent staff overhaul.

It can be abused so hard. I'm against it.
Look at it like this.

You have your forum, Market Forums in this case. You have a lot guest visitors, that's pretty normal for a forum. They just look and see if it's something for them, then they register if it's really interesting. They cannot see posts or threads, but they can see the activity. They might not register, because they find it inactive, but if you allow them to post in the lounge, even they aren't register, then they can feel how it is to be here, but the problem is it can be abused. They can post infected links, spam etc. without you can do anything. You would need more moderators and staff to moderate the section and the other forums would die, because they would be lacking in activity. Nobody would register, because they can post without being register. If you ban a user, then he can still post and when the forum isn't bigger than it is, then I don't see a reason for this to go long. I could come up with a lot other things, why it wouldn't be good, but you could probably guess them, yourself.

Lets just say allowing guests could be abusers could also open up potential security holes!

"Nobody would register, because they can post without being register"

They can't post anywhere just the hut.

"but the problem is it can be abused"

Anything can be abused, it takes mere seconds to sign up.
So anyone can access the Board and spam the entire board.
Creating a single area for guests to post without having to register, will pool the spam we get and more than likely push it into a single section, clearing MF of spam in the other forums.

"You would need more moderators and staff to moderate the section and the other forums would die, because they would be lacking in activity. "

So because mods and staff are checking the hut more, the rest of the Board will die?
How does that work, it takes seconds to answer a report and the staff at MF are quick at doing it.

Of course there are other reasons. That's why we'll test it and see how it goes.
We're not placing this to be permanent unless it turns out to work better than we expected.

It's more likely a signed up member can spread a virus than a guest. Guests would be forced to make it public, where as users can PM users and trick them that way.

@Alex: Guests would have less rights than users, so it would be even more secure lol...

What security holes?

Spreading virus.

As I stated, someone can just sign up to spread a virus.

But a simple fix is. Don't click a link if they're a guest.
But they can keep doing it, if they get banned they would need to register again to spread. There is no limitation, if guests can post.

But if they put it public and you ban their IP they can just use a VPN or proxy and just keep doing it again.

Oh and another thing, you could make 2 forums then.
One for members and one for guests.

I think if someone truly desire to be a part of a forum community they would just damn well register. It is not that hard to fill out a form and confirm your email. If you open the forum to guests there would be no point in registering and they would only cause disruption and spamming.
