its not fair to call somone a scumbag without knowing their position and what influenced them to make a bad decision.

for example:

a highly paid banker gets demoted to a minimum wage admin and finance operator, one day when he finishes work and a blacked out BMW pulls up, rolls down the window, shows him a suitcase full of cash and asks him if he would be prepared to share some account numbers and sort codes. What do you think he would do?

yes what he did was wrong, but, in certain situations people are usually willing to be disloyal to their country or corporation, maybe some terrorists had his family captive? maybe they offered him millions?

and thus, i feel your assumption is unfair.

You clearly don't realise the potential consequences of this. Imagine our whole nuclear launching sub fleet was taken out due to the enemy knowing exactly where they are. This is nothing like someone working for a bank, this is a matter of national security.

you're right, i came at this wrong,

if someone had all of your immediate family at gun point or offered you $50m you wouldn't have done the same?

There is a big difference, in my opinion, between having your family's lives at risk and just a ton of money. If someone asked me to do something like that for tons of money I would not do it. If I had to do the same thing to save my family, then I would probably do it.

That's not what happened, he was actually looking to give the information to Russia. Luckily the British Secret Services don't trust any one and caught him.

okay, another hypothetical situation then.

he has a huge amount of debt and is considering suicide. I'm sure he wouldn't be giving the information for free..

Whats his expected sentence?

He won't be tortured. He has no information that the police don't already know. He never talked to the Russians. The British secret police were acting like the Russian secret police.
