Removing Wisdom Teeth

FML. I just got back from my dentist and found out I need to remove all four of my wisdom teeth. Since I was a little boy, I'd dreaded this day and now it's finally here.

My sister had it done before (all four) and the aftermath could not have been worse. She had everything you could imagine; non-stop bleeding, incredible swelling, bruises, etc. At one point, she surpassed blue bruises and her cheekbone became green!

I guess that's what really drove me to be more scared. But I looked over the internet for people that have done it before and the majority say that the extraction procedure isn't bad at all but rather, it's the aftermath that's non-indulgent.

My dentist asked me whether I'd like to have the surgery done at their complex or through surgery with anesthesia. Having been influenced by my sister's dreadfulness, I was scared shitless and told her I'd much rather be asleep. But after reviewing some stories about people that have gotten this surgery, those of whom were awake, most of them say that all four teeth are removed in less than a minute and another minute or so to stitch up each tooth's gum.

There are two reasons I don't want to be awake for this surgery:

  1. I feel like if I actually see them fiddling and poking around inside my mouth, I'll be more paranoid and freak out.
  2. The pain of the surgery itself.
I found some reassuring advice for the second fear on another forum;

The only thing you feel when they are cutting your gums and digging those teeth out is a lot of pressure. Its amazing! Usually your surgeon will tell you when force is coming so you can anticipate it.

but nothing to help me overcome the fear of being awake and seeing them crush my face in. That's all in my head.

I'd really love to be able to do this surgery having just froze my face without being put to sleep because it will save me a lot of money and time but I just don't see it happening.

For those that have done it, do you have any reassuring advice to help me overcome this and just get it over and done with? I've been brainwashed by all those people saying 'It hurts, oh my god, I hope I never have to do it'.

It's honestly not that bad. One of my friends had it done over christmas break last year and we still even ate nachos and did our usual biking. As long as you take the meds and stay in bed the first day and a half or so it's not bad. Your sister was just a bad case.

It's not as bad as they say. I haven't had mine done yet, but my friend says the knock you out with a stick and then when you wake up you're just a bit sore. He said his gums were pretty sore for a week or two after the surgery, but it's not as bad as you'd think. Just the thought of someone poking around your mouth pulling stuff out is discomforting.

Yea, that's for sure. So you think I'll be OK in terms of the repercussion of the surgery if I follow my dentists' instructions? And the surgery itself should be painful?

Oh for sure. I had my wisdom tooth pulled out with anesthesia, it was a very quick process. And true, the aftermath is what to dread for. But go for the option where you remain awake, trust me.

Why do you suggest to stay awake? any particular reason(s)?

As soon as you can, get them taken out. My brother had the largest infection the dentist has ever seen. And the dentist specialized in those kind of infections. His mouth was bleeding for 2 weeks straight and he couldn't talk. My brother is the toughest person I know, and he was screaming and crying in pain. He was also given 3x the normal dosage to numb the pain.

Excuse my ignorance but what does how long you take to get the teeth removed have to do with the chances of contracting an infection?

My mistake, I skimmed the OP. Mostly because I'm also doing homework at the moment. Sorry.

I just barely got my last wisdom tooth.
I'm glad I won't have to get them taken out. =/

I would suggest that you get the one that involves getting put to sleep.
I had a few of my teeth taken out, and I even ripped out one of my own. (It was a little loose and I was in 7th grade.)

I'm glad you're trying to help but as far as I'm concerned, you're in the same boat as me considering you haven't removed any wisdom teeth. I'd much rather hear what those who have done so can offer because you're just speculating.

WTF? that didnt happen to me lol. They put me under when they did mine and gave me some painkillers. It bled and was swole but not that bad lol.

Solidify, remaining awake makes it seem so short, it will be done with very quickly. (Assuming you have a good surgeon/dentist.) I had only one removed though, but it took like 20 minutes. As long as anesthesia is used, you should be more than fine.

Sheesh you just scared the living lights out of me.
I'm dreading the the day/appointment for when I'm told I need mine taken out
Thankfully the x-rays that HAVE been taken show no signs of having to just yet.
They are trying to snuggle into my jaw though.
Which is quite annoying. </3

I have to say I win, nobody noticed that I said "they just knock you out with a stick"

ninja style.
