Here's what I think you should do.

It looks nice, but I think you should add a fade to white around the edges so it doesn't appear so sharp and cuts off from black to the white background.

Just my opinion, but yes, it looks nice.

Little tip, crop the background image to the parts where you want it to focus on, then resize it. Makes it look a lot less squished up.
The one in the thread looks better IMO.
