There must be some requirement to do it though, a few friends said they couldnt do it.

It was either a mistake or you had Supporter.  It's an upgrade feature, and always has been.

I've never bought Supporter, and @Kowai can do it now and he isn't upgraded. So something must be wrong.

So if you're are unupgraded, but in a usergroup you can change your username?

You and some other members got lucky. Name changes have never been free and they would require certain stuff to do so. One way is by buying an upgrade or by buying it via koins.
You and some others got it for free as it might have been a bug and before Philly could fix it, you guys changed names.

@AE4 Just earn 2 koins by being more active.

get 2 koins and change username, or upgrade and then change username. 
 
Must be the group permissions of the user owned groups.

This option is only available to upgraded members or this is also purchasable within the Koin Shop. @Deviate I would assume you got into a user owned group and that group had the group permission to change usernames. However no groups at this time are allowed that permission besides upgrade groups of course.

Thankyou @Jason when i go to the register page i am unable to see because i have already registered for a account before, Is there any other way of checking if a username is available?

Yes there is! Go here and scroll to the bottom, find the option that allows you to search for a user and search for the username you want. If you cannot find a user with that username, then it is free for the taking! Hope I helped :)

If you make a "new" account that is considered Multi-Accounting and you will have either that account or both accounts banned for doing so.

Just post enough to make 2 koins and then buy a username change. If that's not worth the time, then maybe you shouldn't bother being on this forum to begin with. I think you can handle the 20 posts or so.
