If I had a nickel for every time a user talks about or posts a thread about leaving the forum because they spend too much time online and it's affecting their personal life but then they end up coming back, I'd be really wealthy.
I don't understand what is so hard about regulating how many hours you spend online? The first thing you guys need to do is isolate yourself from things that draw you to going online. For example, if you're at school, working or out with a friend, what is the exact thought that comes through your head when you tell yourself: I want to go home so I can go online? Is it because there's something waiting for you at home that you can do? RuneScape, Xbox, RuneGear, etc. To make it easier on yourself, you need to take away the privilege of doing those things. For example, some people can just tell themselves 'OK, RuneGear is getting less active since the contest ended, so there isn't going to be much in it for me if I go home today to go online. I might as well call up a friend to chill.' However, for some people, the transition is harder. I'll give you another example and don't hate on me for this. For instance, the way wale asked to be banned. If he didn't want to come back to RuneGear, all he had to do was change his password and somehow forget about it. But then there's that driving force that would eventually come back for some users that would make them contact management to get their information back so they can come back. Instead, he was smart and had management ban him so there's no way of him coming back. Most of you guys think it was because he caved after the ban, maybe. But most members that ask to be banned is because the don't want to leave an open window to come back to the forum that is taking so much time from them.
Once you guys manage to make life at home boring and make it so that when you ask yourself: What can I do at home if I go home? And the answer is, well, nothing. There's nothing to do at home, you guys will start staying out more. I guarantee it. Some people can do it will will-power and some people need to do it like wale did. Either way, you're getting it done and there's nothing to be ashamed about.
I just wanted to get that off my back because I really do feel bad for people that spend all day online but sound like smart members that would easily fit in with other friends. Don't coward, you will regret it. Trust me, I did that for 3 and a half years and I missed the best high school years of my life. Now, I'm making up for it.
If someone wants help dissociating themselves from staying online, feel free to PM me and I'll help you out personally and confidentially.
