Letting go of online

If I had a nickel for every time a user talks about or posts a thread about leaving the forum because they spend too much time online and it's affecting their personal life but then they end up coming back, I'd be really wealthy.

I don't understand what is so hard about regulating how many hours you spend online? The first thing you guys need to do is isolate yourself from things that draw you to going online. For example, if you're at school, working or out with a friend, what is the exact thought that comes through your head when you tell yourself: I want to go home so I can go online? Is it because there's something waiting for you at home that you can do? RuneScape, Xbox, RuneGear, etc. To make it easier on yourself, you need to take away the privilege of doing those things. For example, some people can just tell themselves 'OK, RuneGear is getting less active since the contest ended, so there isn't going to be much in it for me if I go home today to go online. I might as well call up a friend to chill.' However, for some people, the transition is harder. I'll give you another example and don't hate on me for this. For instance, the way wale asked to be banned. If he didn't want to come back to RuneGear, all he had to do was change his password and somehow forget about it. But then there's that driving force that would eventually come back for some users that would make them contact management to get their information back so they can come back. Instead, he was smart and had management ban him so there's no way of him coming back. Most of you guys think it was because he caved after the ban, maybe. But most members that ask to be banned is because the don't want to leave an open window to come back to the forum that is taking so much time from them.

Once you guys manage to make life at home boring and make it so that when you ask yourself: What can I do at home if I go home? And the answer is, well, nothing. There's nothing to do at home, you guys will start staying out more. I guarantee it. Some people can do it will will-power and some people need to do it like wale did. Either way, you're getting it done and there's nothing to be ashamed about.

I just wanted to get that off my back because I really do feel bad for people that spend all day online but sound like smart members that would easily fit in with other friends. Don't coward, you will regret it. Trust me, I did that for 3 and a half years and I missed the best high school years of my life. Now, I'm making up for it.

If someone wants help dissociating themselves from staying online, feel free to PM me and I'll help you out personally and confidentially.

Yeah, I have made 2 of these threads, but I have no problem with regulating how many hours I play. It's not because I can't just remove RuneGear from my life, it's because I actually have joy in being on RuneGear, I am not being here too much and can easily quit if it have any influence on my regular life.

Now it doesn't. I have been to 3 different schools, which made me lose a lot of friends, now there is only 7 people in my grade, which makes it harder to make friends. I still do have friends, but not a lot of them.

Now, a little bit more on the topic:

This is very true, but I am not sure if Wale wanted to be banned because he didn't won the contest, as he had only spent like 13 minutes on the site before the competition. He couldn't have grew together with RuneGear in that time, it was a week or so. But we can't be sure. Therefore, I shouldn't blame him for anything. I agree with you, there is a lot of people saying they is going to quit RuneGear just because it's fucking up their real life. Also, if you are banned, you can easily use the "Contact us" at the top and ask to get unbanned.

If you're seriously about that last sentence, i think i need to pm you. ;3

Feel free.

You say you have joy from being on RG but then you have IRL problems. Being online shouldn't cause problems for you. It should be a pass-time.

I try to spend a lot of time online, but I fail most of the time. It really reflects in my grades.

If it's affecting your grades, why are you trying to spend a lot of time online?

I made a similar thread to this ages ago that you agreed with, but you went much more indept lol.

When i was like 13 i was addicted to runescape, i wanted to quit but i couldn't, but that was like 6 years ago, im 19 next month.

I like being online, sometimes I have nothing better to do. But at times it just pisses me off for some reason, like it's so boring :/

To be addicted to something isn't good. Too much of anything isn't healthy for anyone.

You're missing the point of this thread. I'm not trying to take away any of your hobbies. I'm just saying that there are some people that are online 24/7 and think that it's ruining their lives. I'm just offering to help them ease up on the computer time.

I don't really see how people have a hard time quitting things such as staying online, I've quit a lot more addictive things than a website or game.

Some people have personal problems or family related issues and turning to forums brings them temporarily comfort. It's sort of a release.

@"wale" was quite an active member before the contest, he was debating constantly and replying with detailed posts.

I have sleeping problems and whenever I was on the holidays I was be "Nocturnal" so to speak. I would be up at night playing Runescape and sleep during the day, I loved it. I also did the same thing with World of Warcraft, except that was a little more serious, when I had nothing to do I jump around in circles for over an hour on my 70 twink.(Was before I had WotLK, back when that was the latest expansion)

I also like being on, when it's active and things are going on. Now a lot of the time I just multi-task and refresh the latest posts. Honestly if the community had doubled in sized I could probably be here most of the day just replying to threads.
Although I don't think it's because of RuneGear I think it's because I enjoy being on the computer, I love typing and speaking to others.

I can't ban anyone. I'm a moderator.

Within the past couple of years, I've spoken to a lot of younger kids on forums such as Support Forums, Hack Forums and most recently, Rune Gear, and what I've found that a lot of them have in common is their stories. I remember one kid told me that he would stay up all night playing Xbox because he had a sleeping disorder that the doctors just quite couldn't put their fingers on. Another told me he was indefinitely sick which was subsequently preventing him from enjoying himself with friends. Not that any of those children were lying but the fact of the matter is that a lot of you guys give yourselves reasons, and excuses in a sense, to relieve yourselves from doing anything besides staying home. When I asked a person I was counseling on Support Forums why he didn't go out much, he said that it was because he was overweight and got tired rather quickly. A lot of you guys create problems for yourselves that aren't really present as a means to allow yourselves to sit around and do nothing all day. I wouldn't be surprised if half of you live to become Hypochondriacs.

-I love going out, only problem is we moved a couple of months ago and now it's a lovely 2 hour trip to go anywhere. I do it regularly but I have to make plans before I head out, I can't just walk out and call a mate while I'm coming around to his place. Although when I started on RuneGear I did stop jogging, not sure if it's because it was a phase or I just couldn't be bothered anymore. Started working out more though, not sure how that comes into play.

Oh I know, I was just sayin' because I used to be online 24/7 too, and it's good that we have a member like you, we don't have much of them :3
