Actually it is like a college class. Here's a quote from wikipedia.

The Advanced Placement (AP) program is a curriculum in the United States and Canada sponsored by the College Board which offers standardized courses to high school students that are generally recognized to be equivalent to undergraduate courses in college.

Also, if you pass the AP exam after the course you get college credit for that class.
 
I took a few college courses in HS. I apparently have 3 college credits for culinary arts.

Shit, my bad. My school's a bit different about it, 'cause we're about International Baccalaureate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Baccalaureate), or IB, which I guess is sort of the same thing.
