The second quarter of 2012 ended at the end of June, but it took analysts, in this case Jon Peddie Research (JPR), some time to count all the shipments of graphics cards and central processors with integrated GPUs.

As expected, the rising popularity of chips with integrated GPUs has had a good effect on the segment of graphics solutions.

Sales of APUs and Intel chips with IGPs have more than made up for the drop in low-end and mainstream add-in card shipments.

Overall, shipments during the April-June period went up 2.7% on-quarter and 5.5% year-over-year.

In terms of market share, Intel's gains were of 13.6% on the desktop front and 3.8% on the notebook side.

Meanwhile, AMD saw gains in the desktop category (2.5%), while NVIDIA benefited in the discrete notebook segment (6%).

JPR included add-in, discrete and CPU/chipset integrated graphics in its study, plus industrial/embedded GPUs, but not phones, servers or tablets.
