Grammar 101

As I am sure that most of this is already common knowledge to the majority of users on this forum, I do feel that this needs to be addressed. I guess one could call me a 'Grammar Freak,' as I am quite particular with my grammatical usage in everything that I write. I'll provide some examples below.

One of the most common grammatical mistakes that I see is the misuse of there, their, and they're.

There is used to indicate the existence of a particular object, or to mention it for the first time.
Example: "There is a package at the door."

Their is used in order to indicate possession.
Example: "Their exams take place in the cafeteria."

They're is used as a contraction of the words they and are.
Example: "They're going to see the movie."

Secondly, I also tend to see both your and you're misused quite often.

Your shows that something either belongs or is related to you.
Example: "Your computer looks very expensive."

You're is used as a contraction of the words you and are.
Example: "You're doing very well in school."

Also, the third most common mistake I see is the misuse of the its and it's, although it is quite easy to distinguish the two from one another.

Its is a possessive pronoun meaning more or less, of it or belonging to it.
Example: "The dog was wagging its tail."

It's is a contraction of the words it and is.
Example: "It's going to be cold in the morning."

Last but not least, the fourth and final most common grammatical error I see is the misuse of to, too, and two, which I feel is probably the most easy to correct.

To serves two functions, the first being its acting as a preposition, and the second being indicating an infinitive while preceding a verb.
Example: "The woman went to the store."

Too is most commonly used when including something or agreeing with someone.
Example: "He went inside, too."

Two is the number amount of the number 2, and is used to describe having more than just one.
Example: "There are two bakeries in town."

Well, I realize my guide may be somewhat redundant, but I hope that some of you are able to learn from it. If you have any suggestions, be sure to leave them below.

Wait...

So he C&P'd a post that was pretty much already C&P'd?

Damn.

I'm not sure if that's correct, but sure. :p He posted on another forum, I copied and added on my own stuff to it as well and gave credit, then he wanted to post so he did. ^_^

Damn.

I posted this thread on another forum a while back. Then, @Paradoxium posted it on this forum, while also adding some of his own information and mentioning me in the thread. Since the thread was pretty much exactly the same as mine, I kindly asked him to remove it, and he did. Now, here we are, as I decided to post it here on ForumKorner as well.

I'm glad you like it, Jarrett. It's a pretty useful thread to check out if you're confused about the usage of a certain word.

Nice thread, but we're not in middle school. Anybody over the age of twelve should be able to distinguish between the terms you mentioned above. The reason that people do not use appropriate grammar online is simply because they are lazy and do not care. It originates from keypad mobile phones, where people would abbreviate every second word. Typically it's hard to rectify, as they have become accustomed to it.

I completely understand what you're saying. However, I created this thread in an attempt to make other members realize how easy it is to use the correct form of a word. I know that we're all able to distinguish between these terms, but this thread can only help to motivate other members to learn from their mistakes and keep from making them in the future.
