You've gotta join a group. The best one for you would probably be Candy lead by @Lurids & @Yeti as there are no requirements to join.

In order to get a coloured username, you have to join a group.

To join a group you will need to apply in the Groups / Private Sub Forum.

Don't apply via User CP as you will become blacklisted, although I think @yeti's group is open to everyone.

I believe @"Philly" was working on this for normal users as well (as a paid feature) if I remember rightly.
But yeah, other than that @"Patch" is right. Groups are the best way.
