RSBot is currently being updated.
Estimated update: 22nd November
What has happened?
On the 25th October Jagex released an update to RuneScape which broke many bots. RSBot is an injection bot which uses ASM, so while this presents a major setback we are confident that we can overcome the new obstacles.
Why is it taking so long?
The game client uses new and sophisticated obfuscation techniques such as casting, arithmetic overflow and randomised client generation to name just a few. Our developers have studied each new method in great depth and have tuned their code to adapt to these changes. Their work has been tested retrospectively against previous client versions to ensure the robustness and reliability of our algorithms.
Jagex have stated that they are planning more anti-bot updates in the near future. This is why we have to take the difficult yet responsible decision of artificially delaying our releases until we can be sure that there are no more big surprises. In doing this, we are ensuring the safety of all our users.
Another bot has given up, will RSBot be the same?
No, RSBot is truly committed to open source development and promoting the education of Java programming and computer science to our wider audience. We have not earned a cent from RSBot and will continue to provide an open platform for individuals to share their work. We cannot therefore sell out as other parties have recently done.
A previous bot developer has claimed that he/she will put an end to bots, will RSBot die?
We remain confident that RSBot will continue to thrive for the long-term future. At a time when the DRM technologies by Apple, Sony, Microsoft et al. are reverse engineered, circumvented or broken we believe that the capacity exists to overcome any new challenges we are presented with.
To quote Andrew Gower, the founder of Jagex:
Quote
We keep developing technologies to combat bots, but it's like an arms race – we stop bots, they improve their macros, we stop them, they improve again.
If we don't break that vicious cycle now, it would just keep getting worse and worse. It could reach a point where macro software becomes undetectable.
We aim to follow Andrew's Principal and firmly believe in the collective abilities of the free open source community to continue to make such technical breakthroughs.
Bots ruin the game, why continue with RSBot?
We do not encourage the use of bots to cheat the game. We provide and maintain an open source code base for anybody to learn from. There are many members of our community who do not play the game, while others are avid fans.
The powerbot community regularly host in-game events such as powerwars which have been highly successful and popular. If anyone has a passion for RuneScape we would encourage them to buy membership and support Jagex.
However above all our fundamental philosophy remains the same, we believe in the freedom to explore and share ideas.
Is RSBot safe?
Yes, RSBot is entirely open source so our code can be reviewed and inspected by the many thousands of Java experts across the globe. We do not sell any products, so we do not have a customer database. Our privacy policy has been designed to provide the best levels of anonymitiy for anyone using the bot.
