Rune Gear has just been struck by a 6GB/s DDoS attack. The attack had crushed our server causing downtime. Our host had one initiative, crush the attack in it's footsteps. They automatically nulled our IP and stopped any ongoing connections causing Rune Gear to be inaccessible by anyone. Unfortunately, I was asleep at this time. I wake up 3 hours post the attack, and find RG down. This was at about 7am. I do some investigating to find RG down. I was stunned. I attempt to collect some backups and move RG to our backup server. Another f*ck up occurred, our backup server wasn't allowing me to connect.
I had to do something and quick, so I automatically decide to order a brand new server from a more reliable provider. I find one and order it, with better specifications. I had to then leave for the day. I come back at 4pm to find the server still down. I grab some backups my webhost had provided and begin to migrate it to another server (the new one). We're currently running on a new server which is good, but if the attacks continue I may need to upgrade to a Dedicated server to handle the attacks more efficiently, which may cost us 3x the current cost of this server.
I'm just going to be straight about it and I apologize for the downtime. Rune Gear's competition has been reset, and the people in first, second and third place are going to get a complimentary 3M RSGP for their participation, and the contest has been reset as of now. Good luck with the contest.
