Defense does help a lot, the better armor you got, the better chance you'll survive.

i'm 1 defence and have gottan 6-78 dung in less than a week.

But i also have 80 attack and 99 strength. :/

No, dungeoneering gives you a custom spellbook. Plus you would have to craft your runes every dungeon.
