You have to go home to invite someone, unless the game has a shortcut.
Say "Xbox friends" go down to 'Find Someone" and search a name, add friend.
When someone friend requests you on Xbox One, it doesn't come up as a friend request pending, it comes up as a follower. If you want to add them, you go to their profile and add friend too. You both pretty much end up following eachother.
