There's a whole bunch you can do with redstone on mc. have you tested any TNT cannons? Look up some tnt cannons on youtube and play around with them, they are fun, especially on the factions.
Piston doors are cool, I'm certain that's what you touched on in your post, try making light switch's, for example pulling a lever and pistons move blocks to unblock glowstone and light an area up.
