Why human beings build skyscrapers higher and higher?

Is it only for functional reasons (lack of space in the big cities, expensive field)? or by arrogance and eccentricity?
 
It is mainly because of the lack of space in the citys. people want to live close to their jobs and stuff.

probably partially just showing off what they can, but that's only in the extreme cases like those epic things in asia at the moment

I have a friend who works as a property developer and he said that taller ones have high market value. So skycrapers won't stop adding floors to their buildings because of highet market value.
