When it comes to the professional graphics market occupied by designers and engineers then nVidia's Quadro cards can't be beat for their raw horse power but they come at a very high price premium. When it comes to the notebook and home pc market then the balance is in favor of AMD because of their lower power green architecture and low costs.

For gaming speed nVidia has always had the better of gaming cards. In 2009 things changed when AMD took the top spot for the fastest gaming card with their dual GPU Radeon 5970 and held it until the end of 2010. At the end of 2010 NVidia's long-in-waiting Fermi 580 gtx came out. It wasn't able to reclaim the throne as top gaming card but it pushed the Radeon 5970 over in it's seat.

If you are looking for value for your money then it's pretty difficult to beat AMD. If value and power consumption aren't important to you then choosing nVidia's top offering

will usually net you the best card.

AMD's weakness is often in bad card design decisions. Their top 2009/2010 card, the dual GPU Radeon 5970, was too large to fit in many cases which put a burden to use the card on their users.

With the Radeon 5xxx series cards they used mini Display Ports for the 3rd monitor connector. This didn't create an issue for single or dual screen users but it created an issue for business users and gamers who had to purchase extra $30 active display port adapters to get their 3rd screens working.

NVidia's weakness is the cost to own their cards.
