What motivates forum moderators?

One thing that I don't really understand is what keeps forum moderators motivated.

Why do you think that forum moderators do what they do, for free?

I think moderators are motivated by the feeling that they are helping people. Most of them are active posters and the simply have extra responsibility added to the posting which they do for fun.

I totally agree with Clarkie.

You are right to some extent i have seen my mods feel very happy when they see they are helping others and also the sometimes a shiney colourfull batch was enough for them. But i dont think all this works in the long run, one can get motivated by these things for a while but what after that, i have seen many mods working for a forum for years. Do this also work for them.

I think what keeps Moderators motivated is the hopes of a big successful site and them wanting to be apart of that
