What is Dubstep?

My friend told me that dubstep is the genre.
 
Usually it is techno but you will find that a large amount of common songs (especially lady gaga etc..) now have been incorporated with dubstep versions.. some of them sound epic but some just ruin the original song.. a particular one that was hilarious was the rebecca black friday dubstep

Techno, is a music genre, just like Rock, rap, etc...

However, techno has tons of.. "branches" (hardstyle, trance,electro, etcc..), including dubstep.
 
It's based on 'drum and bass'
