What am I to do?

So Thursday I'm chatting with an Army recruiter, which will probably lead to be enlisting right then and there. I am a 17 year old junior (grade 11). I want to go to college after the military with the G.I. bill and major in history and minor in astronomy, which will then lead to me becoming a highschool history teacher, but what the fuck do I want to do in the army? What would be best for what I want to do after the army? I was thinking infantry, but all of the army recruiters told me that'd be a bad idea for a teacher

Someone on the internet who actually has goals. I cannot believe my eyes. I know nothing about the army though, but good luck with everything! If you don't mind my asking why do you want to be a history teacher? I've always sort of had a fascination for history but I don't like it enough to make it something I'd do all day long.

I absolutely love history, it's easily my favorite subject I've ever gone through in school. I think it all started when I was a kid, my dad would leave the history channel on and I'd just sit there and watch documentaries on old world war one and two planes and shit like that, got into highschool and my teachers made history such an enjoyable subject that I'd love to essentially follow in their footsteps, teaching students while making it an enjoyable subject to learn at the same time. I've had my share of teachers that have made me do packet after packet of work, and I know for a fact I learned way easier when the teacher was hands on, had us do group work, and had us really try to enjoy the class, whether that be through group work, or just being a funny guy

As far as astronomy goes, by far my favorite thing to research. I love to just watch documentaries on the universe late at night, some times I'll binge watch documentaries and videos and just learn. I just like to learn about it, it's pretty damn interesting, and I just enjoy the thought of one day being someone that contributed to finding life outside of our solar system (though that may not happen, it's not a far fetched idea, I'm sure by the time I'm out of the military they'll be closer to finding life, and hopefully I can contribute to that)

Sounds cool man! I liked history, and I took it an additional 2 times than the required to graduate, but I didn't like 3/4 of the students and I am overall pretty antisocial so I didn't enjoy the group work. As for astronomy while I have never studied it or tried to really learn about space in an educational setting I am extremely fascinated by space and what lies beyond our worlds atmosphere. It's crazy to think that as big as our world is, the universe is infinitely bigger than that. Thousands of years from now people will get to explore much more of the universe than we are able to now and I think thats incredible. I find it amazing that it takes at least 100 days to get to Mars, one of the closest planets to us. Glad to see someone here shares some interests with me that aren't just music or entertainment. You're a genuine good guy man, serving your country and then coming home to one day educate the next generation.

I enjoy history as well but I don't agree with the education system in North America at all. It's about being taught obediance, not things that are going to increase your knowledge. I wouldn't join the military myself. The only interest I have in it is the beautiful AR the send you home with (which you don't get in Canada -.-)

They don't send an AR home with you as far as I'm aware
Two of my brothers and my dad were in the military, none of them have any ARs

I think you should be whatever you could see yourself doing & actually live through. If you believe you could survive being in active duty, then you should do it.

If it were ME, I'd probably be the Coast Guard or something.
