Hey guys, Ima welder. Its what I love to do and Im not half bad at it. 2nd place at the National Fab contest last year ;)

Anyways, do/have any of you guys weld? maybe take it in school?

If so post what processes you've done. If anyone is interested I can BS about welding forever. I'll let you know what I've had experience with.

OAW
SMAW
GMAW
GTAW
FCAW
GTAW - Stainless
GTAW - Aluminum
GMAW - Spray Transfer
Dual Shield wire, from .045- 3/32

Maybe some others, idk.
What have you guys tried welding with?

My dad is a machinist and I've seen him welding. I've tried it before and it gave me massive headaches. The light is so bright and it just hurts my eyes so bad.

You're supposed to use a welding helmet with shade 9+ in it lol.
What machines does he use? and what does he make?
I've done a small amount of machinging, mostly preping my test welds with the end mill when i dont feel like grinding them.

I have no idea what machine he uses. I'll try and describe it for you.

A big blue box, has a lot of wires coming in and around it, heavy as anything. He makes prototype designs for big companies like General Mills and Kellogs.

It sounds like he uses some kind of CNC machine, which is a computer that is programmed in CAD and make maching a lot easier if you're good with CAD.

Uh well, don't get me wrong here, but what exactly do you mean by welding? Like, what exactly is the process?

The definition of welding is something along the lines of "Join two pieces of metal by completly melting the base metal and having the filler metal match the base metal 100%"

What it means is you're joining two pieces of metal together.

I've never welded before but I've seen it...
I'm planning on taking auto shop next year at my high school anyways...

What's a welding competition, like who can weld the best?

Yeah, At nationals we had to design and build a bbq grill with a certain amount of material in 6 hours. The one that looked the best and used the least amount of scrap won.

Individual Welding competitions go solely on weld bead quality.

No, I've seen their CNC machine, and that is completely different from what he uses. And this is what he uses. It's a death machine xD.
