Unity3D

Just wondering if anybody has used this before.

I've used it a little, like making music players, and other stuff for fun, but I am just wondering if anybody here does this kind of stuff.

Yeah, its a fun little thing. It's best for stuff like Ipod (or whatever handheleds) app games and whatnot, but its fun nonetheless.

Me and a few friends for fun were making up a little game, made the characters, drew out the characters, made music and planned some stages, but it was just a little high school project. It didn't get past the drawings and music, and a test stage with a few menu's, music, teleporters etc.

If you play around with it let me know how it goes.

Why are you guys using something like Unity for a project in high school?
All we will do this year is "learn" how to use Adobe Illustrator.

Me and my friend were second year students in the class called "Interactive Media". The first year we went through Photoshop, Flash, Illistrator, dreamweaver (i went further and made a small website for the class and showed off lol; this was the first year keep in mind)

Anyways, me and my friend took the class again the next year, and 3/6 of our classes (3 hours a day) were THAT class. Basically, over the summer he found out about Unity3D and showed me it in class. It wasn't blocked, so he downloaded it and we showed the teacher. She was like "awesome! This can be a rotation" and basically added the program as a class rotation and named it "game design". It was pretty cool, its basically all we did all year. Though a good portion of it we spent sitting there 'testing' games LOL

Yeah I have it pirated, but then I needed to upload models for trees/ground/stuff and I was like shit. So I haven't gotten further than gray land. But it does look useful and it is easy to understand and the language is javascript so it's kind-of easy.

Why would you pirate it. Lol. The only differences between the free one and the paid one is that you can export the game to different playable systems, and you get better shaders along with a few small time things, like better water... Nothing special.

You can get plenty of free textures like tree's and floor textures, and even free buildings and models that you can use in any of your games you make from the unity store (in the program, not on the website)

I mean, if you REALLY want to be able to export to different playable systems via pirating the full version, dont expect to be able to sell your products (obviously) and just have another computer with the free version on it (or same pc, w/e)

I used to use this engine a bit when I first started game programming.

Overall I like it but if you want to publish with unity it will cost a lot.

yeah it can. Its worth it though if you can make a nice game for things like the ipod App store. Some games can tend to get popular pretty fast. I also looked at the Unreal engine, and while it looks nice and in some situations is easier to use than Unity, its harder to publish games from it unless you have a team and plan for things like PC gaming or comsole gaming.

Yea, I here you there. I have used both I do have to admit I like udk better. Unity is easier though IMO
