This is a compilation of the methods that I have used and have worked for me.
This tutorial was based of Minecraft 1.8.1!
Preface
I have a PC with 8GB of RAM and a 3.1GHz processor. There is absolutely no reason why Minecraft should lag. Though, it did. I was pissed. I had spent $20 on a game I could barely even play, so I looked into speeding it up, and holy shit, what a difference.
Methods
Method One: this is the easiest thing to do, it doesn't involve anything but patience.
-Simply let the world render itself. Minecraft is a resource hog, and is very intensive, unfortunately. So when playing, make sure the world is fully rendered before doing anything like building.
Method Two: install the LATEST version of Java.
-I have found that using the latest version, even pre-releases works the best with Minecraft. Currently, Java 7 is the latest (pre-release) It can be downloaded here: http://jdk7.java.net/download.html
Method Three: set the Java process to the highest priority.
-Open Minecraft, then open Task Manager while MC is open and do what is below:
Method Four: Video Settings
-In Minecraft, click Options, then Video Settings, then turn ON Advanced OpenGL, set the graphics to Fast, and the render distance to Normal.
Method Five: Batch Opener
-Step One: Put the Minecraft executable in a folder, make sure the executable is named "Minecraft.exe," yes, the M has to be capitalized.
-Step Two: Open the folder and right-click on the blank space. Mouse over New, then click Text Document. Hit enter twice to open the document.
-Step Three: Paste this in:
IMPORTANT: Replace the 3072 with half or less the amount of RAM in your machine, or what you desire, remember that one gigabyte is 1024M, and this is measured in M(egabytes), so add 1024 to increase allocated RAM by one gigabyte.
-Step Four: Click Save As..., then save it as Minecraft Startup.bat (the .bat is VERY important). You can actually use whatever you want for the name of the file so long as the .bat trails it. MAKE SURE TO CHANGE Text Documents (.txt) to All Files (*), and then save in the same directory as Minecraft.exe. USE THIS NEWLY-CREATED FILE TO START MINECRAFT. DO NOT CLICK THE EXECUTABLE, CLICK THIS FILE.
Conclusion
That wraps up this tutorial. Don't worry, edits will be made and I will update this as new methods are discovered. If you have a method not listed, post it! I will update the OP.
I'll add OptiFine when I get the time.
Thanks for reading!
