1. Bear in mind that each person is unique and has
his own personality, convictions, values,
capacity to learn, limitations, etc. Accept and
understand his uniqueness and do not expect him
to think the way we think, value what we value,
act as we act. What we expect may not fit his
personality and culture.
Do not use our own standards and values in
judging people for these may not applicable to
them, considering their background and
limitations.
2. Each person is entitled to his own convictions
and feelings. While we may not agree with what
people say or do, just acknowledge their ideas.
In this way we maintain goodwill even in the
midst of differences.
3. While there are rules and norms of society,
human factors can condition and infraction.
Rather than focus on the deviation, try to
understand the reasons and circumstances that
warrant their occurrence.
4. When we reject something, try to understand the
deep seated reasons behind the rejection. Is it
the idea your reject or the source of the idea
(the person expressing it)?
5. Be conscious of our personal prejudices for
they make tolerance difficult if not impossible
6. Remember that love of humanity and tolerance
goes together. To love is to accept and
understand a person for what he is.
7. If we want to make ourself emotionally healthy,
make tolerance a habit.
8. Should we want to expand our circle of friends
and social contacts, make it a habit to be at
peace with every person by understanding them
accepting time as they are, avoiding any show
of discrimination even among those who are
below our standards.
9. Practice the prayer of St. Francis:
- having serenity to accept things we cannot
change.
