I just finished my house, and decided to take a screenshot of me on my balcony looking at a friends house.

The house looks pretty awesome =)
Although I think if you placed the torches somewhere less visible it would be better.
Or you could use lightstone and make a lamppost

That's pretty awesome, you should build an underwater structure in there lake, nothing can beat an underwater house.
