Poison mass poisonings, scandals and allegations are all elements that make up the food scene in China. Severe deficiencies in sanitation and regulation regarding food production in this country, has generated a crisis that threatens the health of millions of people who daily are exposed to random foul highly damaging food intake, either contamination by bacteria or by the presence of additives used to accelerate growth and size of cattle.
Despite the tightening of safety measures imposed by the Chinese government in 2008 after the death of six children and poisoning 300 000 more who drank contaminated baby formula with melamine, the fact is that progress in this area are barely symbolic and the number of scandals is growing and more bizarre. Just last April, more than 500 attendees at a wedding suffered severe poisoning from eating contaminated food, and most of them needed hospital care.
But perhaps the climax of the surreal food toxicity in China occurred a couple of months ago when a woman reported that Shanghai had left a piece of raw pork in the kitchen at midnight woke up and could see the meat issued blue fluorescent light. Experts attributed the phenomenon to a bizarre bacterium that glows in the dark.
Finally, the Chinese government seems to have proven that if not resolved soon the situation will inevitably lose confidence and legitimacy to the governed. Perhaps for this reason the Supreme Court last month issued a statement saying that "food security affects the interests and quality of life, social stability, the future of socialism with the features seen in China." The statement was accompanied by the announcement that the crimes related to food safety will be punished with the death penalty.
