Well I have football workouts every monday, tuesday, and thursday and I'm simply wondering if taken protein shakes after workouts is a good idea. I'm wondering whether I need it or not.

Thanks.

Well, if you're working out like lifting and stuff, it's always a good idea to intake protein so that you can get stronger.. But to determine what type answer these questions.

How much do you weigh.
How much do you want to weigh.

How often do you work out.
What are you workouts.

Honestly, most protein powder is not that good.

After every workout, just have some egg whites, a cooked chicken breast (boneless/skinless), and a glass of water.

At least you know the protein you're getting is natural.

I've put on 15 pounds in a couple weeks without any powder/supplements.

it's good, expensive though.

How much do you weigh. 190
How much do you want to weigh. Maintain the same weight.

How often do you work out. 3 days a week.
What are you workouts. Lifting: Dead lift, squat, dips/pullups, dumbell 7's, benching.

Its perfectly fine to drink protein shakes, just make sure not to overuse it, drink it only after you work out.

Just drink a Gatomax, there best after workouts.. At least the best thing we get in finland :/

It depends on how much protein your currently taking (from food). Weight also plays a factor. It sounds to me that your not working out every day nor workouts specially aimed at mass building. I'd recommend you take a .7 of your weight. If you are 100 pounds and are only getting 50 grams of protein a day then take 20 grams of protein. Taking to much protein is bad for your body and won't help.

@Red protein won't get you stronger. @Steezy protein powders ARE good they help you get the amount of protein you need trough the day, and it's one of the really few supplements that actually help you when gaining mass and getting lean. Do you need them? Only if you are not getting enough protein from your food intake, or you are in a rush to prepare something.
@Famoushope There are really cheap proteins out there, which are also good. @Method As long as you are taking the necessary amount of protein for your objectives you can drink the shakes more times during the day, when adding mass it is even recommended to take a low dispersion protein before bed, so muscle gets the nutrients it needs to grow all night long.

Zangrefia even if you want to stay at 190 punds you might want to make that weight of yours come mainly from muscle not grease, so you need to take protein and also keep in mind you need carbs to help repair the muscle. So I'm assuming your objective is to stay the same weight but the weight coming from muscle mass, you do need to consume more protein and the right amount of carbs (SPECIALLY A QUICK DIGESTIVE PROTEIN AND SOME CARBS). Keep in mind that in those football training days you are burning plenty of calories so you need to eat more those days to prevent you from loosing weight. If on the other hand your objective is to get lean and ripped then the diet and exercises are different. ALSO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO PERFORM THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF REPS AND SETS AT THE GYM ACCORDING TO YOUR OBJECTIVE.

I never said protein makes you stronger, although it may have seemed implied. I was trying to get at, protein helps build muscle, thus getting stronger.

So my post,
intake protein so that you can get stronger
Still stands.

Anyway. I agree with what @"Havok" is saying

And again man you are wrong, muscle mass isn't what gives you strength. Have you ever seen an olympic lifter and a bodybuilder? The bodybuilder is waaay bigger however the lifter is able to carry heavier weights. The same applies to olympic gymnasts they are also big (and ripped ass hell) but not ass big as a bodybuilder and i would like to see one of them perform what a gymnast does!
There are more examples man, but trust me on this one muscle mass might give you a bit of strength but trainings for muscle mass and strength are very different.

Wow, thanks for the help guys. You guys really are a great community.

@"Havok" - Protein powders are honestly not that good for you. Sure, they give results, but most are not natural. Even if you're taking Whey Protein, it's not the best shit for you.

Your body can only take in and use about 30-40G's of Protein at once anyways, so some chicken will do you just fine.

Protein powder is over priced and you can get a better bang for your buck just sticking with natural proteins from real food.

Stick to an all-natural diet. If you need protein, get it from real foods such as bananas and nuts. If you really must take a supplement, read up on creatine, although some people experience rather disturbing side-effects.

Bananas aren't a good protein source, nuts are good but mainly used for the fat in them. For muscle building what you need is animal protein. Zangrefia if u need more help regarding this pm me ;)

Btw steezy again i have to disagree with you mate, I mean I'm a huge fan of chicken breast I eat it along with tuna and salmon as my main protein sources, also lots of milk. Believe me protein powder is necessary when you are in a rush, as a post-workout drink since you can choose a fast absorbing protein and at bedtime as I stated before to ensure you are getting all the protein you need. Also there are a lot of proteins which are really good quality and are cheap. And of course you don't take all the protein you need in one meal, for example my diet this days consists of 5 high protein meals so I'm never short on protein and none of it gets wasted.

I really don't understand why you say protein powders aren't good for you, surely they aren't necessary but many people just don't have time between school/jobs/home, whatever, and a quick milkshake is the way to go. The average person of course doesn't need protein shakes but if you are serious about building mass or getting lean, and want to mix your meals with other protein sources, again, protein powder is a nice choice.

I take GNC performance 100% hydrolized whey protein post workout all the time and it does help... it helps repair the muscle tissue enabling you to workout more and gain mass/muscle mass faster

I think your gonna gain muscle weight no mater what but if you have fat and you do a hard core work out then in about 2 months you will lose about 30 pounds. Thats what happened to me when i joined wrestling last year, and and for any1 that wants to know i wasn't not eating and drinking nothing like everybody else my parents didn't want me to because I have kidney stones and when i'm dehydrated my body makes more of them.
