I'm not 100% sure but I'm guessing your upgrades can be taken away from you with no refund if you do something very wrong but not banable, but there is also the risk of being banned. I just wouldn't risk spending money on a site that isn't going to be here/ I won't be using in a few years or could suddenly come to an end within a matter of months.
 
I bought into 1 group and it was to give a poor kid money

This is why I never paid for upgrades either.
 
Everyone needs what they need. If I were him and I got a good offer, I too would have sold it.

And I would use part of the money to give back to the users.
