RAT/Keylogger activation

Hey guys Im trying to do something and in order to do it I need to download a rat/keylogger. Does every rat/keylogger need to be opened in order for it to infect me? or can they infect me simply by downloading it. thanks!
 
You can only be infected by executing the application.
