[Q] Why is this a thing?

Maybe if you have a friend who is using your computer...? That's the only possibility I can think of.

then your IP's will match up...? that could potentially get you banned for multi.

I think it's a function for larger MyBB communities, for example if I have a sister/brother who is on the same forum, where multis are more regulated. Then again, I could be completely wrong.

I was one of the merged members from RuneGear. I had been inactive for like 3-4 years, haha. Thanks.

Ontopic: (I feel like there gotta be some ontopic), maybe it's a feature that could be removed, but it would also be a waste of time, because it does not really harm anyone and even if you do multi-account, it wouldn't be something that stopped you from doing so.
 
It is a default MyBB feature. Believe it or not, there are forum boards out there that do not regulate users' accounts and allow their users to have more than one account.

This feature is, however, ideal for users with siblings that are also apart of the community. Other than that just ignore it.
 
Thanks for the mature response, Jason. Its still odd if you had siblings, IMO.
