First thing up the most common way people infect other people is by uploading .exe files and Java Drive By's.
Now if you are downloading a file that has a .exe file extension and it's something like free auth downloader then it's 9/10 to be a virus.
Note: Virus's cannot be any other file extension so don't worry!

What are Java Drive By's?
Java Drive By's are message prompts that you get when entering a site like this:

Hello, I know some of the servers that are doing Java Drive by's, The biggest one at the moment is 2specced, but remember not every time that you see this popup, it isn't always a drive by. If you like that it is one, then look at your processes running, google their locations.

Virus Can can be on any file extension. From .exe .com .bat .vbs and then there virus that are FUD.
