Girlfriend died because she had a bad liver, she's had that problem every since she was a kid. If you guys would like to know personally details.

@Hat if you've experienced the same thing as him, it's SYMPATHY. If you haven't, but still feel really bad about it, it's EMPATHY. In your case, use SYMPATHY in that statement (you'd love to give him sympathy but you haven't experienced it, etc.) You can, however, give him Empathy because you haven't experienced that but still feel really bad for him.
