Quote from Wikipedia: "Minecraft is a sandbox-building independent video game written in Java originally by Swedish creator Markus "Notch" Persson and now by his company, Mojang."
History of Minecraft:
Minecraft was orignially released for testing. Notch (the head developer of Minecraft) released an Alpha version of Minecraft on May 17, 2009. On August 4, 2010 the Alpha update 1.0.15 included the first ever Multiplayer. After some time, Notch released a Beta version of Minecraft on December 20, 2010. On August 11, 2011 the MineCon website was launched. The full release of Minecraft was released by Notch on November 18, 2011 at that years Minecon. On December 2, 2011 Notch stated on his blog that he was stepping down from head developer of Minecraft. He left the head developement position to Jeb. Since Jeb has been the head developer, there have been 2 updates to the full edition of Minecraft.
Future Updates & More:
Most people who play Minecraft play it on the PC where the game originated. Now you can play Minecraft where ever you go, and on many other gaming devices! On October 7, 2011 Notch released Minecraft for Androids. On November 17, 2011 Notch released Minecraft for IOS known as the Minecraft Pocket Edition. Now, soon to be the full release is the Minecraft for the Xbox360. It is said to be released for the Xbox360 in 2012 with support for the Kinect. Minecraft for the Xbox360 is currently under development by 4J Studios.
Griefing:
Quote from the MinecraftWiki: "Griefing is the act of angering people in video games through the use of destruction, construction, or social engineering. Popularized in Minecraft by "professional" teams, griefing has become a serious problem for server administrators who wish to foster building and protect average builders. "
Some forms of griefing that most people will do include the following:
- Destruction: Destroy structures and other things players make
- Creation: Build offensive structures
- Spawning: With eggs, or mob eggs, people can constantly throw them lagging the server
- Flooding: Placing lava or water over everything
- Spawn Killing: Servers with PvP (Player versus Player) can allow people to constantly kill people over and over not letting them leave the spawn area
- Trees: People can place trees and make them grow using bonemeal
- Fire: People can set structures on fire and watch it spread and burn down everything
- SE: People will talk there way into getting power and then destroy the server using there new power
- Fly: Allows the player to fly through the sky
- Xray: Lets people see ores, mob spawners, chests, and more in the ground
- FullBright: Makes all blocks the highest light level
- NoFall: The person will not receive damage if they fall
- Sneak: Lets them sneak but move faster while sneaking. Sneaking hides a persons name if they are behind a wall
- InstantMine: Lets people break blocks with 1 hit
- Forcefield: Automatically attacks people
- Nuker: Destroys all blocks in a reaching distance
- Step: Lets people walk over blocks up to 9 blocks high
- Build: Preset structures that let people automatically place if they have the items
- FastPlace: Lets the person place blocks faster
- Freecam: Lets the person fly outside of their body. They cannot do anything to the blocks, items, or players while in freecam
- Spam: Lets the person send a lot of messages in the in-game chat
Servers & You:
Using the Minecraft multiplayer you can connect to servers and play with other people from around the world. There are many different types of servers out there. Here is a list of some of the server types:
- Survival: Just a simple server that lets you build and collect items
- Creative: This server is built around giving people all of the items to build what ever they want
- Roleplay: Usually a story behind the server, and people are given or select roles to play in-game, such as Cook
- PvP: These servers are built around Player versus Player gameplay
- Hardcore PvP: These servers are like PvP, but anything is usually aloud
- Prison: People usually have to earn enough money or item to rank up. After a while you may be able to buy freedom
- Faction: These servers are based around people grouping together in "factions" to raid and kill other factions
- Challenge: Usually is a server about surviving in special conditions such as on a block in the sky
- Drugs: These servers revolve around getting specific items and selling them between other members in secret. Once you get enough money or items you can rank up.
- Death: These servers are like Hardcore PvP servers, but if you die you are banned from the server for a set amount of time
SP & MP Mods:
A lot of people who play Mincraft use mods for Singleplayer and Multiplayer. These mods can affect the game in many different ways from adding a new item to changing how you play all together. So far there are no official mods for Minecraft, but Mojang just hired the people from bukkit to make modding Minecraft much easier. Minecraft is coded in Java. Anybody with Java knowledge, or knowledge of how Minecraft coding works can create mods.
Server API Modifications:
As I said before, a lot of people use mods in Multiplayer as well. Most servers usually use a server modification called Craftbukkit. This allows people to add plugins (special modifications to the game) to their servers. Plugins can be used to keep griefers from griefing, while others will let you create massive structures in minutes.
Minecraft Menus:
Minecraft has many Menus that you can go through. I will try to explain as best I can what each Menu is for, how to use it, and what features each Menu has. The first Menu is the Singleplayer Menu.
Singleplayer:
Singleplayer lets you create your own world and play by yourself. You can do what ever you want in your world with no rules. You can create a new world by clicking "Create New World", once there you can name your world, select one of the three different types of gamemodes, and choose different world modifications. Once you have created at least one world you can view the name of that world, the date and time of when you last logged off that world, and what type of gamemode that world is. You can also rename your world to what ever you want, and you can delete any world at anytime.
Multiplayer:
Multiplayer lets you connect to servers where you can play with other people from around the world. In this Menu you can add servers to your server list by clicking "Add Server". From here you can type in any name you want for it, and then the IP of that server. Once you have listed at least one server, you can view if it is online or offline, what you named it, and the IP of that server. You can edit your server list at anytime, delete any server from the list at anytime, and you can directly connect to any server without adding it to the list by clicking on "Direct Connect".
Texture Packs:
Texture packs edit how blocks, items, tools, weapons, and armor look. Some texture packs do not always edit how every item, block, etc look. Texture packs are created by people and are not officially made by the developers of Minecraft. You can get these texture packs all over the internet, or you can make your own by editing the pictures in the minecraft.jar. In the Texture Pack Menu you can add, view, and select from different texture packs.
Options:
In this Menu you can edit different things in-game including the sound, difficulty, controls, brightness, and more. This menu is mostly to let you make the screen how you like, how your mouse is, and what your controls are.
In-Game Menu:
You can access this Menu by pressing the Esc button usually located at the top left of your keyboard. At this menu you can view the Achievements that you have and can earn. You can view your stats such as Distance walked, Distance swum, and more. The rest of the In-Game Menu is just the regular Option Menu.
Important Minecraft Sites:
The following websites are very popular to Minecraft players.
Minecraft.net: You can buy, play, gift, change your skin, and more at this site.
Minecraft Forums: This is a forum where you can view Minecraft news, download Texture packs, and much more!
MinecraftWiki: Has all information about Minecraft in general.
Planet Minecraft: Another Forum dedicated to Minecraft where you can get Texture Packs, skins, etc.
Jeb's Twitter: Jeb's twitter that he updates about Minecraft from time to time.
CurseNetworks Youtube: They make videos about Minecraft all the time.
Bukkit: You can get Craftbukkit for your server here, and there is a forum as well. If you are a java coder, you can also make plugins for bukkit.
Youtube & Minecraft:
Youtube is a website that lets anybody with an account upload videos to the site. Most people know about this site that go on the internet, but I figured I would tell you that. Youtube has many videos covering many different topics, but one of the big gaming topics is Minecraft. Some common videos about youtube include the following:
- Let's Play - People create worlds and talk about what they are doing and what they want to achieve.
