You saw a shirt for $97. You didn’t have the cash, so you borrowed $50 from your mum and $50 from your dad = $100. You bought the shirt, and had $3 change. You gave your dad $1 and your mum $1 and kept the other $1 for yourself. Now you owe your mum $49 and your dad $49. 49+49 = 98 + your $1 = 99. Where is the missing $1?

OR if its not that Its a trick question because it doesn't say where the $1 go

It's $98 that you owe them plus the two you already paid them back equals one hundred.

This doesn't have anything to do with math. The math is fairly simple. It's the thought process.

There is no missing dollar. You kept that $1. You buy the shirt for $97 with a $100 bill. You get $3 back. One for you, your dad, and your mom.

Got it, so you Have $3 change, give them back $2 and you have $1. But if you didn't give the $2 you still owe them 50 each = 100, but you still have 1 for yourself. So you have it

$1 + $1 + $1 + $97 = 100
$49 - $1 = $50 + $1
$49 - $1 = $50 + $1
$1 you have + $1 + $1 + $97 (for the shirt) = the price.

You paid $97. $50 from your mom, $50 from your dad. You paid them back $1 each. That makes $49 you owe times two for the other parent. That equals a total of $98 you still owe them. You cant add the dollar you kept to what you owe them, you add it to how much you paid for the shirt.

There is no missing £1
You borrowed two times £49 pound = £98, and spend £97 pound, and now have an extra pound to keep for yourself.
You are adding up what you owe, plus what you have which doesnt work, as there is no £100 pound. Once you give them the £1 back if you are adding up what you spent you should either add up 49 +49 = shirt + 1 change or if you are adding up what you borrowed originally that is 50+50 = shirt +3 change

They are two difference equations cleverly put together to make it look like there is a missing pound


That's the correct answer just in Pounds

Ask them to borrow the $1 again, now you have $3 ($2 from then and $1 from yourself), now, $97 (price of the shirt) + $3 = $100 you borrowed.

Simple maths.

Pretty much, but it's quite complicated in a way I guess.
