Is river Ganga purifier of sins?

Many people go to river Ganga and take a dip in the water to get rid of their sins. They know that they are doing some sins and there will be punishment for those sins. They used to go to banaras and other piligrim places to have a dip in holy river. Is it true that the river Ganga can remove our sins?
