Is programming a good career, or a hobby?

Well I love to program and create new things and I'm currently thinking of taking it on as a career but I don't see too many good outcomes of it. I don't see where me programming would land me a solid career anywhere. I'm sure companies would like a custom made piece of software for them, but a full time job would be nice. So what do you think?

I have been hearing things on both sides of the spectrum. I myself, am a computer science major. Recently, I've been getting real serious with my career and I'm not sure if computer science is for me. In the major department at my university, they tell me there are plenty of great careers that pay well. At the same time, I hear things such as the field isn't as stable as another field would be. And this is sort of true, I personally know people who can't keep a job for a reasonable amount of time, they just come and go if that makes sense. I'm in the same boat OP. I'm not sure if I should switch majors or stick with it. I looked at computer science from a different perspective, and thought to myself, "is coding really for me?" or "Do I really want to sit at a computer screen and create a program, sometimes for continuous hours?" I'm really good with computers, but does that mean I want to deal with them for the rest of my life as a professional career? To me, that sounds kind of boring, to you, maybe not. But hey, whatever floats your boat I guess. It's starting to frustrate me, because nothing else really interests me, YET. Just play the field and I'm sure you'll find something.

for me at the moment it is a hobby, it can turn into a career if your persistent enough and ambitious enough to go for it

Thanks for all of your responses. I think I'll lay back and see what will happen.
