It's just another form of entertainment that went from being introduced by the hardcore enthusiasts who had to go out of their way to enjoy it to casual audiences who like the fact that they can now watch anime from a variety of easy to access streaming services. Whereas with older anime your choices were limited to what was shown on TV and what you could get bootlegged from Japan, most anime today is fairly easy to find in decent quality online. We saw the same thing happen with videogames and pretty much every genre of music that has ever been popular. Since it's an extremely flexible form of entertainment that has been building a base for many, many years, I definitely wouldn't consider it a fad, but I would say that the amount of people who watch anime is going to continue to rise quickly until it eventually stabilizes, be it in two years or twenty. I personally don't watch nearly as much as I used to, but if I notice a show that I think I might enjoy I don't hesitate to watch it, at least not out of fear of looking weird.
