Okay, I have seen a few threads for vanilla servers and thought I would make one for bukkit.
Firstly, what is bukkit?
Bukkit is a minecraft server mod that allows you to install plugins for extra commands and features. About 99% of decent servers will use bukkit.
How do I get it?
To download the latest version, go to dl.bukkit.org.
Once you have downloaded it, you will get a jar file, move it to its own folder on the desktop called "Server". Rename the .jar file to just "craftbukkit"
Setting up the server
In order to run the server, you need to have java installed.
You can download java here.
Now we need to create a batch file. We will run this batch to start the server. Open up a text editor (Notepad or Notepad++) then paste in the bellow code.

java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar craftbukkit.jar
PAUSENow save this batch file in the same place as your craftbukkit.jar, and double click it to run it.
A command prompt window will appear, this is your server console.
Some more files will also be generated into the Server folder.
Console Commands
stop - Turns off the server.
reload - restarts all plugins
? - lists other commands
Configuring Your Server
You should have a server.properties file. Right click it and open it with your text editor, then change any settings you don't want.
Here are all the available changes.
Connecting to your server
In minecraft, if you are hosting it on the same computer you want to play from. Enter the ip "localhost" and you will connect. If it is on the same network as you, you need to enter the local IP of the computer hosting it. To get this run cmd, then type in "ipconfig". The IPv4 Address, is the IP you need to connect to.
Allowing friends to play
To allow your friends to connect, you need to open a port. The default port is 25565. You can change this in the config. Opening a port is specific to your router. If you need help PM me, I am not covering it here.
Once you have opened your port, your friends need your IP to connect to. You can get it from ipchicken.com.
Getting Plugins
To get plugins, you simply download them from plugins.bukkit.org, then place them into your plugins folder, then edit the config.
