It should scare her. If you're legitimately worried about it ask her. That's the only you're going to find out. Just tell her someone contacted you online, and you're worried about identity theft. She might be mad, but she'll understand OP.

One way to see if the SSN is real is ask your mom about it or go to ssnvalidator dot com and punch in those numbers to see if the SSN is invalid a valid one
