How long you should ban a member for.

Hey,

When banning a member you need to consider what that member has done and whether or not you want them to return after their ban. In some cases this will leave you with an easy decision and very little to think about however, in other cases you'll find you need to consult the rules or use your brain.

The easiest bans to give are permanent ones. You have no need to consider whether or not you want the user to return, you are simply getting rid of them. This can be used for spambots or users who are repeat offenders when it comes to rule breaking.

When you have users who are breaking smaller rules such as signature size you want to do your best to make them return. This means you should first use warnings, sometimes verbal or sometimes through a warning system, and only use the banhammer on repeat offenders. However as I've already said, you don't want to make the user never come back. In this case you should try to keep bans to a small amount of time. You are trying to make them notice the rules, not to deter them from using the forums.

In this case the small amount of time should be enough for them to see their ban but only so they will have to come back later that day or possibly that week for slightly worse rules.

Remember, you forum rules may actually state what users should be banned or warned for, so always look out for that first.

Hopefully this will help with the moderation of your forum(s).
