After market cleaning products leave more of nasty taste than rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol can easily and more thoroughly be washed out, unlike other products the smell or taste does not stay as long. Rubbing alcohol helps dissolve the residue, the salt is used as mini "bristles" which helps with stubborn residue. Water and salt alone won't get your piece as clean as it could be if you were to use rubbing alcohol too.
I understand that jason, but what alot of people dont understand is that if a piece is plastic or has scratches of any sort in the glass, the rubbing alcohol decides to just sit down and relax while absorbing to make a non stop after taste, i used this shit call 420 to clean my pieces when i still smoked and it left no after taste at all
For smaller items just boil some water, add some salt, and drop them in, let sit for like 3 minutes, pick up and drain, repeat
also helps if you add salt and water into a bag after wards and shake the shit out of it with the piece in the bag.

I used a product called 420Formula (I assume it's the same product you use), it works wonders, but it smells awful and left a nasty after taste in small pieces such as pipes and bubblers. When I cleaned my old bong using it, it didn't leave the after taste so much. I would recommend 420Formula to anyone looking for a product to clean bongs. As for pieces, I suggest sticking with the old boiling method or the rubbing alcohol method (both work great).
yes tupac, but make sure to tape off the hole for the stem and hold your hand over the mouth piece where you hit or youll have a big fucking mess
and also use epson salt like i said it leaves a far less harsh after taste and its bigger so will work like a hella better scrubber.
