History of Marijuana (USA): The Pilgrims brought the marijuana plant to the New World to make hemp rope. Smoking of marijuana wasn't introduced to the United States until the 1920's, when it was brought to the U.S. from Mexico. It was recommended for a variety of disorders, and was listed as an official drug until 1937.
Today, eight states have legalized marijuana as a medicine, but the Federal law says marijuana is illegal. The eight states are Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii. On May 14, 2001, the Supreme Court ruled that medical marijuana is illegal. They did not overturn the state laws, but said that if people use marijuana for medicine, they are breaking federal law.
